Pro Tip: Use the “Four-Box Method”

When tackling a particularly cluttered area, bring four boxes and label them: “Keep,” “Donate,” “Recycle,” and “Bin.”

This method helps you stay organised while sorting and making sure that nothing unnecessary makes it back into your space.

Declutter First

The first step to home organisation is to declutter.

I have a simple 4-step process for decluttering you can find here.

Go through each category:

  • Clothes
  • Kitchen
  • Books
  • Office
  • Bedrooms [Toys, Accessories]
  • Lounge
  • Bathrooms
  • Garage / Loft

Then decide what you want to keep and store it properly.

See this post for effective ways to store and fold your items you have decided to keep.

Donate, recycle, and bin the rest.

Be ruthless—if you haven’t used something in the past year, it’s probably time to let it go.

This process might take a bit of time, but it’s a crucial first step to making your home your happy place.

Maximise Storage

Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to think about storage.

If you are a regular reader you will know I always say that the key to an organised home is having a place for everything.

Consider investing in multifunctional furniture, (big word for me) such as ottomans with hidden storage or beds with built-in drawers.

If you want to do it on a budget, use parcel boxes, and plastic boxes like I do.

Kitchen

Cupboard Organisers: Use shelf risers, pull-out baskets, and lazy Susans to make the most of your cupboard space.

Drawer Dividers: These are essential for keeping utensils, cutlery, and other small items in order.

Bedroom

Under-Bed Storage: Perfect for storing off-season clothing or extra bedding.

If you can’t store them under your bed then use suitcases and store them in there as I do.

Wardrobe Systems: Keep your wardrobe organised by using hangers effectively and fold like a pro.

This makes me so excited! I know, weird but I get so much joy from seeing my home organised.

Living Room

Bookshelves: Use them not just for books, but also for displaying decorative items like candles and photos.

Storage Baskets: I love storage baskets and they are ideal for keeping blankets, toys, or games out of sight but easily accessible.

Pro Tip: Label Everything

Labelling shelves, drawers, and containers helps everyone in your hive know where things belong.

This small step can make a big difference in keeping things organised.

Daily Habits Checklist

  • Make the bed every morning.
  • Hoover daily
  • Do a quick tidy-up before bed.
  • Handle paperwork as soon as it comes in.
  • Wipe down kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces daily.

Daily Habits

Home organisation is an ongoing thing, not a one-step thing.

Creating daily habits to keep the order you’ve worked so hard to achieve is essential.

Spend 10-15 minutes each day tidying up, and encourage everyone in your hive to put things back in their proper places.

Seasonal Deep Cleaning

Twice a year, keep a weekend free to deep clean and reorganise.

This is a great time to check what you have, what you need, and what you can get rid of.

Rotate seasonal items, such as clothing and decorations, and make sure everything is in good condition.

This way you don’t build up the clutter and feel like you have to start all over again.

Get Everyone Involved

Home Organisation is a team effort.

Get everyone in your hive involved.

Assign age-appropriate tasks to children, you can find them here. And make it a fun family activity.

The more everyone joins in, the easier it will be to keep an organised home.

Final Thoughts

Home Organisation is not about perfection, it’s about creating a happy and stress-free home that works for you and your family.

With these tips, you can turn your home into a well-organised joyful place that fits your lifestyle.
