Curly hair can be really beautiful, but it also needs extra care, especially curly hair in the fall.

When the weather changes, so does our hair. Fall brings cooler temperatures, wind, and sometimes rain.

You may be like me and wishing for warmer months already.

Fall can make curly hair dry and frizzy. But don’t worry! By following some easy steps, you can keep your curls looking soft, shiny, and healthy.

Here are some simple tips to help you care for your curly hair in the fall:

1. Keep Your Hair Moisturised

In the fall, the air can get dry, and that means your curls might lose moisture.

Curly hair already tends to be dry. This is because the natural oils from your scalp have to travel around all the twists and turns of your curls. This means it takes longer to get to the ends.

This is why keeping your hair hydrated is very important!

Use a Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner: When you wash your hair, choose a shampoo and conditioner that says “moisturising” on the bottle.

I love using Faith in Nature, they are kind and don’t contain any of those nasty sulphates and silicones. This will help give your curls extra moisture.

Try to avoid shampoos with harsh chemicals. Ones like sulfates, because they can make your hair even drier.

Deep Condition: Once a week, depending on your hair, use a deep conditioner.

This is like a special treat for your hair!

You leave it on for about 10-20 minutes, and it makes your hair feel super soft and hydrated.

Deep conditioning helps lock in moisture. It also keeps your curls from feeling dry or crunchy.

Your hair will thank you.

2. Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often

Curly hair doesn’t need to be washed every day. In fact, washing it too much can take away the natural oils that help keep it soft and healthy.

Depending on whether you are a strict, curly girl or use natural ingredients but not as strict. Then you wash it when you know it needs it. This may be day 4 for me as I have an oily scalp. Get to know your hair.

During the fall, you should try to wash your curly hair about 1-2 times a week. This helps to keep your hair from getting too dry.

If your hair feels like it needs a little refresh between washes, you can use a leave-in conditioner. Or spray a little water on your curls to bring them back to life. Again trial and error.

3. Use a Leave-In Conditioner or Hair Oil

Leave-in conditioner is like regular conditioner, but you don’t rinse it out.

Here is my favourite.

It stays in your hair and helps keep your curls hydrated throughout the day. You can also use a hair oil, like argan oil or coconut oil, to add shine and protect your hair from getting too dry.

Just rub a little bit in your hands and smooth it over your curls, focusing on the ends. Don’t use too much otherwise, you look like a greaseball.

Using a leave-in conditioner or oil is especially important if it’s windy or chilly outside.

It adds an extra layer of protection to your hair, keeping it soft and smooth.

4. Be Gentle with Your Hair

Curly hair can be delicate, so it’s important to be gentle with it regardless of the season.

After washing your hair, avoid rubbing it with a towel. This will only add to breakage and frizz.

Instead, use a soft cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel to gently squeeze out the water. This helps prevent frizz. We all want that, right?

When it’s time to comb your hair if you wish to do so, I prefer not to. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your curls.

Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots. This way, you won’t pull or break your hair.

This is good to reach your children this too even if they don’t have curly hair.

5. Protect Your Hair While You Sleep

Did you know that your hair can get damaged while you sleep?

To protect your curls, try these tips:

Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase: These fabrics are smooth. They don’t rub against your hair as much as cotton pillowcases. This means less frizz and breakage when you wake up. I use this one.

Sleep with a Loose Braid or Pineapple: Before bed, gather your curls into a loose braid. Or put your hair in a “pineapple” (a high, loose ponytail on top of your head). This helps keep your curls from getting squished while you sleep.

6. Get Regular Trims

In the fall, the weather can be harsh on your hair, and you might notice your ends getting dry or split.

To keep your curls looking their best, it’s important to get regular trims.

You don’t need to cut a lot, just a little bit every few months to get rid of the damaged ends.

This will help your hair stay healthy and grow stronger.

7. Protect Your Hair from the Weather

Fall weather can be tricky.

Remember the same products you use in the summer probably won’t work well in the fall.

Some days it’s windy, and other days it might rain. To protect your hair from the weather, you can wear a hat or scarf when you’re outside.

Just make sure the hat isn’t too tight or rough, because that can flatten or tangle your curls. Look for hats made of soft fabrics like cotton or satin.

If it’s rainy outside, don’t forget your umbrella! That is if the wind lets you keep it up.

Curly hair can get frizzy in the rain, so staying dry will help your curls keep their shape.

8. Try Using a Diffuser When You Blow-Dry

Air-drying your curls is best because it helps keep them hydrated. But if you’re in a hurry or it’s too cold to air-dry, you can use a diffuser.

A diffuser is an attachment for your blow dryer that spreads out the heat. This helps your curls dry without getting too frizzy.

When using a diffuser, set the blow dryer to a low heat setting. High heat can dry out your hair and cause damage, so it’s better to take your time and dry your curls gently.

If you are like me and have fine curls then you may opt for blow drying often as it gives us volume too.

9. Experiment with Fun Fall Hairstyles

Fall is a great time to try new hairstyles!

You can try cute braids, ponytails, or buns.

Just remember to be gentle and use hair ties that don’t pull too hard. Loose styles are best for curly hair because they protect your curls and keep them from breaking.
