In this post
I suffer from depression and have done for a lot of my life. Feeling sad or low for a long time can be really tough.
If you feel like this, it might be depression.
Depression isn’t just feeling down once in a while – it’s when sadness sticks around and makes it hard to enjoy life.
I am not a professional, I am just talking about my personal experiences and things that have helped me.
Here are some things that helped me with depression:

1. Talk to Someone You Trust
When you feel sad or have depression, it helps to share your feelings with someone who cares. This could be a parent, friend, or professional.
They can listen and give you support.
Sometimes just talking can make you feel a little better.
I have had therapy on and off for most of my life. What actually helped me was CBT.
This doesn’t mean it will or will not help you. We are all different and in different circumstances. But definitely worth a try.
2. Do Things You Enjoy
Even if you don’t feel like it, try doing something you usually like. For me, it’s going for a walk, reading and tidying up.
You may like drawing, playing a game, or sports.
Doing fun activities can lift your mood, even if it’s just a little bit.
I know it’s hard to leave the house sometimes. I also know that you can have depression and still ‘act’ normal.
3. Take Care of Your Body
Your mind and body are connected.
Getting enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and move your body.
These all help keep depression at bay.
Simple things like going for a walk or yoga can help you feel better.
I also like to keep a journal of my thoughts and feelings. Things that help and don’t.
I use this notebook.
This is a great tool and remember to do it even on days that you feel good.
4. Focus on Positive Thoughts
It’s easy to get stuck in negative thinking when you’re depressed.
We often tell ourselves things that are not true.
Remember not all thoughts are facts!
Try to remind yourself of good things, even small ones.
Write down three things you’re thankful for each day, like a sunny day or a kind friend.
Having a strong gratitude practice is a great way of keeping our minds healthy.
I also love using this app every day. Give it a go, it’s free.
5. Be Patient with Yourself
Healing takes time. It’s okay to have good days and bad days.
Be kind to yourself and remember that it’s okay to ask for help.
You are not alone. You are human.
6. Ask for Professional Help
Sometimes, depression needs more help than what we can do alone.
Talking to a counsellor, therapist, or doctor can really help.
This doesn’t mean you are broken or something is wrong with you. It just means you need some TLC.
They know how to help people feel better and can give you tools to deal with your feelings.
7. You’re Not Alone
Remember, lots of people feel this way, and there’s help out there.
This doesn’t mean you are less important.
It also doesn’t matter if you are male or female, anyone can get depression.
You’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s okay to reach out for support.
Depression is hard, but with time and help, you can start to feel better.
You are strong, and there are people who want to support you!
