Hi lovely readers,

As the New Year approaches, I always get the itch to start fresh.

Okay well if I’m honest, I am often like that. Lol.

There’s something about turning the calendar that feels like a chance to reset and get everything in order.

One of the best ways to welcome the New Year is with a good old-fashioned declutter.

If you have kids as I do, then your home will be filled with more toys, books and crafts after Christmas.

Now is the perfect time to declutter what no longer gives you happiness.

Trust me, it’s easier (and even fun!) when you break it down into simple steps.

Here’s how I tackle the clutter in my home – and how you can too!

Enjoy and don’t forget to comment at the end, I love hearing from you and subscribe to get access to FREE printables, newsletters, the latest posts and more.

Why Decluttering Before the New Year Feels So Good

First off, decluttering isn’t just about making your home look tidy.

It’s about creating space – both in your home and in your mind.

When there’s less stuff around, you feel calmer and more in control.

My husband knows I am feeling stressed or out of control if I am on a cleaning and tidying spree. Afterwards, everything makes more sense.

I might be weird, let me know if you do this too.

Plus, after all the festive chaos (anyone else drowning in wrapping paper and leftover mince pies?), it’s nice to reclaim your space.

Where to Start? The “One Small Space” Trick

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed if you try to declutter everything at once.

Instead, start with one small space. It could be:

  • A kitchen drawer that’s overflowing with random bits.

  • That pile of shoes by the front door.

  • The bathroom cabinet (how many half-empty bottles of conditioner do you really need?).

Pick a spot, set a timer for 15-20 minutes, and go for it.

You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done in a short time.

The Four-Pile Method

This is my go-to system for sorting out clutter.

As you go through your things, make four piles:

  1. Keep – These are items you use and love.

  2. Donate – Things that are still in good shape but no longer useful to you. (Local charity shops are brilliant for this!)

  3. Recycle – Paper, plastics, or electronics that can be recycled.

  4. Bin – Items that are broken or unusable.

Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used it in the past year, you probably won’t use it next year either.

Tackle the Festive Clutter

Let’s talk Christmas decorations for a second.

Before you pack them away, take a moment to sort through them.

I do this every year when it’s time to pack it all away.

Future you will thank you.

Are there decorations you didn’t use this year?

Perhaps the tinsel is looking a bit tired, or some baubles have seen better days.

Keep only what brings you happiness and store it neatly in labelled boxes for next year.

Make It a Family Activity

Decluttering doesn’t have to be a solo mission.

This is how I get my kids involved.

Turn it into a game.

For example:

  • “The Toy Toss”: Ask them to pick 5 toys they no longer play with to donate.

  • “The Wardrobe Whirlwind”: Have them try on clothes to see what still fits and what can be passed on.

Reward their effort with a sweet treat or a movie night. It makes the process feel like a team effort!

Small Wins Make a Big Difference

Even if you only declutter one or two areas, it can have a big impact.

A tidy kitchen counter or an organised wardrobe can make your home feel lighter and brighter.

Ready for the New Year

When your home feels clear and calm, you’re setting the tone for the year ahead.

You’ll have more energy and space (literally and mentally!) to focus on what truly matters.

Use My Organiser to help prioritise and focus on important tasks, not just at home but in your everyday life.

So, pop on your favourite playlist, grab a bin bag, and let’s get started.

Wishing you a clutter-free, cosy start to 2025.
