Home Education Made Simple: Popular Subjects and Flexible Schedules

In this post

Home education is when children learn at home instead of going to school.

I have home-educated both my girls from the start and wouldn’t change a single thing.

Many families in the UK choose home education because they like the freedom to teach their children in a way that suits them best.

In home education, parents or guardians can decide what subjects to teach and how to teach them.

There are so many different ways to home-educate.

The only rule is that your children get an education. How you do that is up to you and your family.

Enjoy and don’t forget to comment at the end, I love hearing from you and subscribe to get access to FREE printables, newsletters, the latest posts and more.

In this post, I am talking about popular home education subjects.

Perhaps you are new to home ed or your children are at the age to start actively learning and you want some ideas to get started.

Here you will find those subjects, links and a schedule that you can customise to fit your family.

A really important thing to remember is if you have always home-educated your children or are just starting out from being in school.

Not to pressure them into learning.

You can leave things lying around for them to look at. Ask them what they want to do.

Avoid the words teach and learn. Especially if they have just come out of school.

Also, remember as parents we have to unschool too.

Be patient and enjoy the ride.

Project-Based Learning: You and your children pick a topic, and your children work on a project about it. For example, if you’re studying space, they can create a model of the solar system.

Nature Learning: Spending time outdoors and learning about nature. You can go on nature walks, learn about plants and animals, or even grow a garden.

There are plenty of forest schools around now too if you want to try that.

Ways to Home educate

There are many ways to home-educate your children, and every family can find what works best for them.

Here are some methods:

Don’t forget to customise these to fit your child’s ability and age.

Structured Learning: This is similar to a school schedule. You have specific subjects to study each day and follow a timetable.

To be honest, I don’t know many that do this but it doesn’t mean it’s not right for you.

Unschooling: This is more relaxed and the most popular.

Children learn by following their own interests and doing activities they enjoy. For example, if your child loves dinosaurs, like my youngest. You can read books about them, visit museums, and watch documentaries.

Children love learning and you will be amazed at how much they will learn left to their own devices.

Weekly Schedule for Home Education

Here is a simple weekly schedule for children from the age of 7.

I say this as many don’t start educating their children in active learning until this age. Of course, you can tailor it to whatever suits your child, family and age.

It includes different subjects, breaks, and activities to keep learning fun and balanced.

I haven’t put times in as many people get up and start their day at different times.

We don’t start until 10 am for active learning.

You can do these subjects from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. Go with what works for you and your child. You can always come back to it.

You can also change the order to suit you.

Bee's Final Thoughts

Home education gives you the chance to tailor learning to your child’s needs and interests.

Whether you’re following a structured plan or letting your children explore their passions.

The most important thing is to keep learning fun and engaging.

The schedule can be flexible and change as needed, so don’t worry if some days look different from others.

Remember, learning happens everywhere! So don’t panic if some days or weeks they are not interested or illness strikes the family.

This could be you’re reading a book, playing in the garden, or cooking together in the kitchen!

Home Education is filled with curiosity and a chance to experience many different things and meet many different people.
