Self-doubt is when you don’t believe in yourself and think you can’t do something. I’m not going to lie, I have become good at this.
I used to get picked on for being the person who always said “What if.”
This self-doubt is often something we learn as a child and slowly we believe it and it sucks the life out of us.
It’s like a little voice in your head saying, “I can’t do it.”
But guess what?
You can!
Here’s how to get past self-doubt and be more confident.

Remember Your Strengths
Think about things you’re good at.
Don’t be too hard on yourself if you struggle with this.
This can take some practice.
Perhaps you have become very good at letting that self-doubt rule your life.
Write them down.
Keep them as sticky notes and post them in places you visit often, like the bedroom, bathroom mirror and so on.
Maybe you’re good at drawing, helping others, or being a good friend.
Remind yourself of your strengths when that self-doubt creeps in.
Talk Back to Negative Thoughts
I don’t know about you but I give my self-doubt voice a name. It could be Karen, Sh*thead, or maybe your mother’s name would work for you.
Giving that voice a name gives you the fuel to fight back.
When that little voice says, “I’m not good enough,” talk back to it!
Say “Thanks for trying to protect me but I’ve got this.”
Say things like, “I can do this” or “I’ll give it my best shot.”
Positive thoughts can push away doubts.
Don’t underestimate the power of positivity or gratitude.
Remember, thoughts are not facts!
Set Small Goals
Instead of thinking about the big task, break it into smaller steps.
For example, if you need to write a report, start by writing one paragraph.
Small steps help you feel less overwhelmed and more confident.
Science tells us that we are more likely to stick to something if we do it in small steps.
Read this brilliant article on forming good habits, it’s long but well worth the read.
Learn from Mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes.
Don’t be hard on yourself for being human.
Remember not all thoughts are facts. I know I already said this but it is important to remember.
We often tell ourselves things that are not true and we believe them.
Question those thoughts.
Are they facts? If not, thank them for trying to protect you and let them go.
Instead of feeling bad, think about what you can learn.
Mistakes are a part of getting better.
However, you need to be honest with yourself for this to work.
When we fail, we can grow.
Keep trying, and we’ll improve over time.
What advice would you give to a friend in your situation?
Practice Being Kind to Yourself
One thing that always helps me remember to be kind to myself is this:
Would you be mean to a friend who’s trying their best?
Probably not!
So, don’t be mean to yourself. Sounds simple but when you’ve spent years listening to that Karen it can be hard to stop.
Be patient and give yourself credit for trying.
Celebrate Your Wins
When you finish a task or do something brave, celebrate!
You didn’t let self-doubt win, you won!
Even if it’s something small, it’s still a win.
Reward yourself for being strong and pushing through self-doubt.
Getting past self-doubt takes practice. But with time, you’ll learn to trust yourself more and keep going, even when it’s hard.
You are stronger than you think!
