As 2025 approaches, it’s the perfect time to sit down with your family and dream big for the new year.
I love doing this as a family activity. Not only does it create bonds but we all get a chance to decide what we would like to achieve for the new year.
Plus, it can be really fun!
In this post friends, I’ll share an easy step-by-step way to set goals as a family.
As a regular reader and subscriber, you will know I home-educate my two girls. I have another bubba on the way in March, so creating goals is important for us all to feel involved and respected.

Why Set Family Goals?
Life can get busy, and sometimes we’re all moving in different directions.
Setting family goals brings everyone together to focus on what’s truly important.
It helps you:
-
Work as a team: When everyone has a role, you feel more connected. There’s nothing more stressful than trying to achieve it all on your own.
-
Celebrate wins: Hitting a goal feels even better when you do it together.
-
Create memories: The dreaming, planning, and achieving can be as meaningful as the goals themselves.
How to Set Family Goals in 5 Easy Steps
Have a Family Meeting
Grab some snacks, sit down in a comfy spot, and make it fun.
It could be around the dining table, on the couch, or even outside.
Let everyone know this is a time to dream and plan together.
Reflect on the Past Year
Start by talking about what went well in 2024.
What were your favourite memories?
What are you proud of?
This gets everyone thinking positively and ready to dream about the future.
Dream Big for 2025
Ask everyone to share their hopes and ideas for the new year.
Here are some questions to get you started:
-
-
What do we want to do more of as a family?
-
Is there something new we’d like to try together?
-
Somewhere you would like to visit as a family?
-
How can we support each other better?
-
Set SMART Goals
Once you’ve got your ideas, turn them into goals.
Make sure they’re SMART:
-
Specific: Clear and detailed.
-
Measurable: You can track progress.
-
Achievable: Something realistic but challenging.
-
Relevant: Meaningful to your family.
-
Time-bound: Has a deadline or timeframe.
Example: Instead of saying, “Spend more time together.” You could set a SMART goal like, “Have a family game night every Friday for three months.”

Create a Plan and Make It Visible
Write your goals down and put them somewhere everyone can see, like the fridge or a family board.
Break each goal into small steps and assign tasks if needed.
For example, if one goal is to save for a holiday, decide how much you’ll save each month and track it.
How to stay on track
-
Check In Regularly:
-
Have quick check-ins during family meals or weekly meetings to celebrate progress and adjust if needed.
-
Celebrate Milestones:
-
When you achieve a goal (or even a step toward it), celebrate!
-
A special treat, a family outing, or even just a big group hug can make the moment memorable.
-
Keep It Fun:
-
Remember, this is about growing together and enjoying the journey.
-
Don’t stress if things don’t go perfectly—adjust and keep going.
