If your mornings with the kids sometimes feel like a cross between a game show and a fire drill, you’re definitely not alone.

Between reminding them to put socks on to half-eaten breakfast. It can make even the calmest parent feel their patience slipping before 9 am.

But a good morning routine doesn’t have to be an impossible task. With a little structure and a lot of kindness towards yourself, it really can become one of the most peaceful parts of the day.

So, join me in finding better morning routines for kids and ourselves.

Why Morning Routines Matter

Kids thrive on predictability. When they know what comes next, they feel safe, capable, and more independent. And when they feel calm… you get to feel calm, too.

A clear routine:

  • reduces fussing and nagging

  • builds confidence as kids take responsibility

  • frees up your mental space

  • sets a positive tone for the whole day

Small habits really can make a big difference.

Our Family-Friendly Morning Routines

Here’s a simple structure that works well for many families (including mine!):

You may want to tweak it slightly to fit your family and ages.

Wake up gently

A soft light or a favourite song works wonders for older kids. Maybe a hug or a small story for younger kids.

Brush teeth & wash face

Starting with hygiene helps kids feel fresh and ready.

Get dressed

Laying out clothes the night before is a lifesaver, and I do it for myself too.

Eat breakfast

Something quick, fun, and balanced.

Pack your bag

Or even better, pack it the night before and just double-check in the morning.

Shoes & coat on

The finishing touch before heading out the door.

To help make mornings even easier, here’s a simple chart you can print and stick on the fridge, a bedroom wall, or by the front door.

Kids can tick each task as they go, perfect for visual learners and little ones who love a sense of achievement.

Bee

I’ve always loved planning, especially days out and holidays.

But after becoming a mum, I realised how overwhelming it can be to organise anything and keep family life running smoothly.

So I started Bees Organised Hive to help mums like us feel more prepared, more confident, and far less stressed when planning family adventures.
