Right. Let’s talk about the myth that family days out have to cost a small fortune.
Because they don’t.
You do not need a £100 theme park ticket to make memories. Half the time, our kids just want an adventure, a picnic, and the freedom to run wild for a few hours.
And the best bit? You can absolutely have a brilliant day out for under £20 — sometimes even for free.
Here are some of my favourite budget-friendly ideas that still feel like a “proper” day out.

1. Local Nature Reserve + Picnic (£5–£10)
Honestly? One of the easiest wins and our family fave.
Search for a nearby nature park or woodland walk.
Many are completely free, with parking costing £5 or less.
Add:
-
Packed lunch from home
-
A scavenger hunt (leaf, feather, something red…)
-
A flask of tea for you
Suddenly it’s an adventure.
If you’re near a bigger park, you’ve got hours of exploring without spending more than parking and snacks.
2. Beach Day (Even in the UK!) (£5–£15)
British beaches are wildly underrated.
Think rock pooling, sandcastle competitions, chips to share, and a windy walk along the seafront.
Check out your local beaches and use your free day out planner to help you make sure the day goes smoothly.
Budget breakdown:
-
Parking: £5
-
Ice creams: £10
-
Memories: priceless
Pack spare clothes and a towel, and you’ve won half the battle. You will thank me later.
3. Museum Morning (£0–£10)
So many UK museums are free (thank you, Britain).
We love museums, you can easily spend a few hours somewhere like:
Top tip from one mum to another: Don’t try to “do it all.” Pick one section. Let the kids lead. Stop for snacks before everyone gets hangry.
Budget for:
-
Parking or train fare
-
A small café or shop treat (optional!)
4. Farm Shop + Play Area Combo (£10–£20)
Lots of farm shops now have little play areas or mini animal sections.
You get:
-
Outdoor play
-
A wander around
-
A shared cake and coffee
And it feels like a treat without being a full farm park price.
Set a spending limit before you go (those farm shop candles are sneaky).
5. Country Park Adventure Day (£5–£15)
I love Country parks, and these are absolute gold for busy mums like us.
Your local country park will have:
-
Big open space
-
Playgrounds
-
Woodland walks
-
Often a café and toilets (hallelujah)
If you fancy, bring scooters or bikes, and suddenly it’s a full-day activity.
6. Treasure Trail Around Your Town (£10–£15)
Have you tried a self-guided treasure trail?
You download it, follow clues around your local area, and the kids feel like actual detectives. It’s super cute.
It turns a normal town centre into an adventure.
Add:
-
A bakery stop
-
A charity shop challenge (find the funniest item under £2)
Done.
8. National Trust Car Park Hack (£5–£10)
If you’re not a member, here’s a little trick. Some National Trust locations allow access to walking routes and grounds for just the parking fee.
Do make sure you check before you travel to avoid tantrums, and that’s just the adults.
But you can often enjoy beautiful surroundings without paying full entry prices.
9. Library + Café Date (£5–£15)
Libraries are such an underrated day out. We absolutely love our local library.
Story time, book browsing, colouring tables — then a small café stop after.
It feels like an outing, but it’s calm, contained, and low-cost.
Perfect for those “I need to get out of the house but I’m exhausted” days.
The Secret to Keeping It Under £20
Here’s the real trick (and you know I’m going to say this):
Plan just enough.
Not a military-level schedule. Just:
-
Parking sorted
-
Snacks packed
-
A loose plan
-
A spending limit is decided before you leave
That tiny bit of prep removes 80% of the stress.
And that’s when days out actually feel fun instead of frazzled.
